Compare EV and petrol
energy costs.
Estimate petrol and charging costs using your distance, vehicle consumption and energy prices.
Your location and vehicles
Start here, then adjust the prices and driving details below.
Enter four digits to set the location for fuel and electricity lookups. Postcodes can cross state borders. You can change the lookup location below. Your electricity rate still needs your bill or an eligible plan; it is not inferred from postcode.
Initial results use example consumption until you choose vehicles or enter your own consumption below. Choose a specific petrol vehicle or a vehicle-type sample average. Manually entered fuel prices are kept when you change postcode.
Your inputs
Start with a charging style. Fine-tune it to fit your life.
↗ Your driving
Choose a model for a published lab figure, or use your own consumption. Adjusting the EV slider switches back to Custom.
Choose a type for a sourced sample average. Each tested vehicle counts equally; these are not sales-weighted Australian fleet averages. Large 4WD excludes AWD. Hybrid means a conventional petrol hybrid, not a plug-in. Checked 18 October 2026. AAA test results ↗ · Vehicles and calculation data ↗. The slider stays editable.
Price in use: AIP / MotorMouth · national ULP average · week ending 11 October 2026.
Starts at the published national ULP average. Choose a local weekly average below, or edit the petrol price. Premium grades may cost more. AIP national source ↗
Australian fuel prices · all states & territories
Published weekly retail unleaded (ULP) averages from AIP / MotorMouth, including GST. Choose a state, then a city or regional average. NSW and ACT share one source table. These are weekly averages, not today’s station prices or premium fuel prices.
Station feeds differ by state and may require approved API access. The separate NSW station lookup is awaiting credentials; weekly coverage above works without those credentials. For remote towns without a published row, enter your local pump price.
NSW station lookup · API access required
Fetch an unweighted mean of reported station prices for one NSW postcode and petrol grade. This is not a metro-wide or sales-weighted average.
NSW FuelCheck API source and access ↗
Melbourne and other Victorian areas require separate Servo Saver access; the public feed is delayed by about 24 hours. No generic regional or remote price is substituted.
ϟ Your charging
Find published electricity plans 19 retailers ↗
Look up published residential market offers from the Australian Energy Regulator. Rates below include 10% GST. This is a plan reference, not a cheapest-plan ranking.
Public charging mix AC, fast & ultra-fast ↗
Shares refer to energy, not charging sessions. Adjusting one share balances the others to keep the total at 100%.
Advanced settings Charging losses ↗
For your own battery-energy figure: wall energy = battery energy ÷ (1 − loss). Leave losses at 0% if your consumption figure already includes charging losses.
Estimated wall energy: 15.00 kWh / 100 km.
How the calculation works
The formulas, sources and exclusions used in this estimate.
How are driving costs calculated?
Petrol cost per 100 km = litres per 100 km × dollars per litre. EV cost per 100 km = wall kWh per 100 km × blended electricity price in dollars. Annual cost = cost per 100 km × annual kilometres ÷ 100. Results use full precision until displayed.
How do you blend charging prices?
Home price blends standard and discounted charging by energy share. Public price blends AC, DC and ultra-fast charging by energy share. We then blend home and public prices. A rate in c/kWh × kWh/100 km also gives the same numeric value in c/km.
What does the break-even rate mean?
It is the average electricity rate at which EV and petrol energy costs are equal, allowing for any charging losses. It is not a purchase payback estimate. Percentage savings are unavailable if petrol cost is zero.
Are these current Australian energy prices?
Electricity defaults, including the 4.72c overnight rate, are editable illustrations and are not offers from any retailer. The optional AER lookup retrieves published plans with their source dates and conditions. Check eligibility, GST-inclusive rates and conditions on your bill. A cheap EV tariff can be offset by household prices and supply charges. Compare plans with Energy Made Easy or Victorian Energy Compare.
What is excluded from these savings?
Purchase price, depreciation, finance, home charger installation, servicing, tyres, repairs, insurance, registration, household supply charges, solar opportunity costs and incentives. Consumption varies with speed, weather, load and vehicle. All amounts are AUD; use consistent GST-inclusive inputs. No data leaves your browser when you calculate. Shared URLs contain your settings.
Can public charging cost more than petrol?
Yes. High charging prices, an inefficient EV or an efficient petrol car can reverse the result. This calculator shows the extra cost when that happens. Having access to discounted home charging can make a substantial difference.
